Death of a Cameraman - Ep.05 | Homeless in Hollywood
Updated: Aug 27
In Episode 5 of Death of a Cameraman, Aaron Cox shares the raw reality of becoming homeless in Hollywood after COVID shut down the entertainment industry and his income disappeared. This episode goes beyond the idea of “rock bottom” and reveals the daily survival details: sleeping in a car, using a gym membership for showers, filling water bottles, eating leftover pizza, searching for bathrooms, taking tourist photos for small cash, and hiding the truth from family and friends. Aaron reflects on the emotional weight of shame, isolation, and trying to appear okay while quietly falling apart. Homeless in Hollywood is a powerful reminder that losing everything is not only about money or shelter — it is about dignity, identity, and finding the courage to survive one more day.
My musical choice for Episode 5 would have to capture the internal fear of my outside circumstance while acknowledging this need to understand why this was happening to me. I couldn't decide on just one song... So I had to go with these two songs below.
The truth is my world had completely crumbled all around me and I had hit my rock bottom. There were times I rolled up my windows and I screamed... crying out to God, "Why is this happening to me?!?!" "Lord please help me!!"
I remember the first day I knew I was sleeping in my car I had the thought to take the photo that I share on all the podcasts. That was sort of a strange thought that came to me outside of my circumstances... That was the documentarian cameraman in me... Why would anyone want that kind of photo?... But I had the idea, even for the briefest of moments, that I may need this one day for something more... when I finally get out of this situation. But I didn't know then if maybe I was being delusional... I didn't know... And in hindsight I think this experience was orchestrated by God, because He knew I would use this experience to acknowledge Him.
